The game's name is a reference to the term, 'deus ex machina,' which is an unexpected power or event that saves a hopeless situation, used mainly in ancient Greek plays. The term's definition could foreshadow or reference to Brian D managing to convince Calhoun to let him participate in the varsity tryouts in Episode 9, despite being expelled. In Episode 4, right before the title screen it shows the FBI logo and it says "Winners Don't Use Drugs" below. This is a reference to the NES run'n'gun game Narc, in which Brian D robo-trips out of his mind. The logos for Dance Ex Machina are designed by Rob TokarzJenny's Dance Ex Machina machine as seen in Episode 4.

“That mindset of ‘I’m at work now’ is really important.” · Setting boundaries might involve being up front about needing to avoid communication outside of clarifying choreography or other work-related conversations. Perry suggests dancers intentionally frame their ex as a co-worker.
Katy*, a ballet dancer based in New York City who wished to remain anonymous, experienced a breakup with a fellow dancer in a project-based company. Initially, she avoided her ex, even faking being sick or traveling out of town, but eventually they were paired together to rehearse a pas de deux.Lisa D. Long, a former modern dancer and current professor at California State University, Fullerton, found that dancing with her ex felt natural, if not always easy. “We had a successful partnership before we were a couple,” says Long, “so we still had that physical trust and nonverbal communication—shared breath, shared heartbeat.Part of a work breakup inevitably involves communicating with leadership and other dancers. When Katy’s company tours, couples are assigned to share rooms. “The artistic director always becomes aware of who’s together,” she says, explaining that those couples are often cast in pairs, as well.Keeping things professional is essential, even in a workplace that emphasizes expressivity. “We’re constantly tapping into our emotions to tell a story,” Perry says. “That mindset of ‘I’m at work now’ is really important.” · Setting boundaries might involve being up front about needing to avoid communication outside of clarifying choreography or other work-related conversations. Alex Garland's sci-fi film Ex Machina celebrates its 5th anniversary this year, and we're still thinking about the Oscar Isaac dance scene.
It’s not the paralyzing moral questions the film presents, but one singular moment that has truly stood the test of time. Nathan, the ever-drunk and occasionally psychopathic antagonist of Ex Machina, takes a moment out of his stressful everyday life to show off his dance moves to Caleb. There’s something so intoxicating about the story, which follows a programmer named Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) who wins a contest that lets him spend a week at the private estate of his boss, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). The prodigy CEO lives on an expansive plot of land, in a secluded and erudite mansion, that holds a cavern of mysteries. That’s a dubious title that many before and since him have held, but it’s hard to deny the power it provides. If you weren’t looking at lip-biting Poe Dameron moments, you were watching Oscar’s hips undulate—his shirt unbuttoned, head shaved—in this clip from Ex Machina. But more than anything, the breakout scene feels like the perfect way of summarizing the larger themes of the film that contains it. Ex Machina is all about our relationship with technology; how the allure of something’s impressive facade distorts our perception of the thing itself.
Exploring the now-iconic dance sequence from one of the most impressive debuts and stylish sci-fi's in modern cinema, Alex Garland's 'Ex Machina'.
Bringing his story to life with breath-taking settings and a series of equally stunning performances by Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, Alicia Vikander, and the criminally underrated Sonoya Mizuno, Ex Machina rightfully earned award-season success and audience approval in equal measure. Though the movie as a whole was a triumph, there was one stand-out scene that would become embedded into the cultural consciousness. After spending the film’s early stages carving out a suitably robotic atmosphere through ultra-modern architecture and a minimalist score, Garland alleviates the tension with an unexpected, neon-lit dance break. The choreography that follows well and truly delivers on that promise, as Isaac and former ballet dancer Mizuno swing their limbs around in perfect sync. It’s surreal, unnerving, and undeniably entertaining. This unexpected change in gear is something Garland had intentionally decided to include after making mistakes with tone in previous projects. Speaking about his screenplay for the dystopia Never Let Me Go, the director explained to IndieWire that he regretted maintaining such a consistent tone throughout the story. For Ex Machina, he endeavoured “to do something that just busts up the tone and woke people up”. The disco dance sequence most certainly achieves that goal. But while the scene is there to break the tension and tone up for audiences, it also seems to hold its own purpose in the plot.A flick of a switch plunges the trio into a red light, and the glorious sounds of Oliver Cheatham’s ‘Get Down Saturday Night’ fill the room, punctuating Nathan’s declaration, “I told you, you’re wasting your time talking to her. However, you would not be wasting your time if you were dancing.” The quiet of the film and the neutral colour palette are suddenly interrupted as Kyoko begins to saunter around the room.
Holding a drink in one hand, she swats his hand away and taps him on the back of the head before turning to face the camera with a stunned expression on her face. She then moves down the table to an area away from Dourthe and continues to dance on camera.
